Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic and antiprotozoal agent of the benzimidazole type. It is used for the treatment of a variety of intestinal parasite infections, including ascariasis, pinworm infection, hookworm infection, trichuriasis, strongyloidiasis, taeniasis, clonorchiasis, opisthorchiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, giardiasis, and gnathostomiasis, among other diseases. Albendazole also used to treat neurocysticercosis(an infection of the nervous system caused by pork tapeworms), cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum(an infection caused by dog tapeworms). Albendazole works by keeping the worm from absorbing sugar (glucose), so that the worm loses energy and dies.
