Febuxostat is a prescription medicine called a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor that is used to lower blood uric acid levels in adults with gout. Febuxostat is used to lower hyperuricemia (high uric acid in the blood) in patients with gout who have been treated with allopurinol that did not work well or cannot be treated with allopurinol.
